Life imitates horror
This collection of jewellery is a celebration of my personal love of set and costume design in horror to create immersion and convey character through design across animation and live action. The film theory of the monstrous feminine, an interpretation posed by Barbara Creed of how horror films conceptualise women predominantly as one dimensional victims was an idea I wanted to reference through this collection. By constructing a nuanced narrative through the composition of my work that draws references from colour and motif to allusions of period accurate silhouettes and symbolism.
The collection ‘Life Imitates Horror’ is an oeuvre of one-of-a-kind pieces and made up of carefully curated new and vintage components that I painstakingly sourced from online vintage vendors, local bead shops and upcycled broken jewellery to construct vivid depictions of character and film. Yet pieces are not immediately recognisable as film inspired, a deliberate choice to satisfy a niche market of film enthusiasts while still offering versatility and capacity for everyday use.
