Creature Comforts
Creature Comforts that addresses the issue of textile waste and how this can be reduced through the production process. I was given 5kg of left over material from fashion brand Eat.Me.Do who create coats from vintage woollen blankets but were left with the issue of cut offs and large pieces of useless scrap material. Despite wool being a biodegradable material, landfills are often ill equipped to complete this process correctly, therefore my goal was to use 100% of the material. The pieces I was given ranged drastically in shape and size, viscosity and condition. All the material was 100% wool with a felted fleece finish which helped shape my process.
My pieces demonstrate reuse of wool at a variety of levels from large discard pieces, narrow strips and irregular scraps. I aimed to create versatile materials to be used in domestic settings as the narrative of woollen blankets is of the domestic sphere. It carries the same connotations of comfort, safety, insulation and warmth to evoke a sense of reassurance in the user when using products developed from the felt material.
